Being nice doesn’t cost anything, yet it can get you a lot of the things you really want. Take love and admiration, for instance. Start off by handing out a compliment to someone who does nice things for you. From the attendant at the gym to the barista who dishes out your smoothie most mornings, handing out a few compliments or indications that you care about them will make you feel good. On top of that, these people will remember your kindness, and return it either in the form of special favors or smiles that tell you no matter how tough a day you’re having, they’re in your corner. Social gatherings will be part of your life now, so make sure you’re covered in terms of staying with your program. If you know some food that’s bad for your diet is about to be served, eat something healthy before you show up for the event. That way, you may not even be tempted to fill up on calorie-rich, nutrition-poor items such as cake and canapés. When you’re already satisfied, nibbling on vegetables without the gooey dip will feel just right. Another way to deal with this social energy, of course, would be to get the office gang out for a walk over lunch hour.
